The Day of Silence, also known as Nyepi, marks the beginning of Saka - the Balinese New Year. It will take place on 7 March 2019.
The Day of Silence is a religious ceremony to hide any human presence in Bali: no noise, no outdoor activities, no artificial lights, no TV, and as you might expect, no internet or cellular data either. It is a day of introspection, reflection and deprivation for the Balinese.Traffic is forbidden, not only vehicles but also people, and they are obliged to stay at home.

You will discover a Bali that you have never known before, the whole island is literally transformed into a "ghost town”. And to make sure no one breaks the rule, the Pecalangs (local Bali security officers) control and provide security on the streets, but can also stop certain activities that might disturb the Nyepi.

For many tourists and expatriates, the Nyepi is an inconvenience, but it can also be seen as an incredible and unique experience. It is the perfect time to for example meditate, deliver your favourite book, spend a day with your family, or simply do nothing without looking for an excuse. The day before the Nyepi, you can attend the Ogoh-Ogoh ceremony. During this ceremony, you will be allowed to make as much noise as possible to scare and chase away evil spirits and to prepare for the day of silence.

The Nyepi is a unique experience, and there is only one of its kind in the whole world.
